The other day I got asked the question “how do I overcome my thoughts about my body?”
Wow.
That’s a powerful question.
Our minds can be really frustrating at times.
But when we learn our minds and overcome the thoughts dragging us down, our minds become POWERFUL.
The question still remains… how do we overcome our thoughts?
The simple answer.. it’s a process.
Let’s dive into it more:
I want to give you 3 steps you can take toward overcoming negative thoughts you are having about your body.
Let me say 2 things first.
1. THIS WILL NOT BE EASY
2. THIS WILL TAKE WORK
If you are ready to put in the work, then you are in the right place.
This journey may not be easy, but it is SO WORTH IT!
So here’s what you can do:
1. Become aware of your thoughts
In order to change your thoughts, you have to be aware of your thoughts.
Here’s the funny thing, you have to think about what you are thinking.
So often we just move through life going through the motions. Not thinking about our actions or how our thoughts are impacting us.
We just do what we have to do.
When we become aware of our thoughts, we can then move forward with the actions we need to take to change the thought.
When this client asked me the question about overcoming the thoughts about her body, she had already taken this step. She was aware enough of her body that she knew these thoughts were holding her back.
Since she was aware of the thoughts holding her back, she was ready to move on to the next step.
2. Replace the thought
Replacing your thoughts will feel very unnatural at first. This will be a very intention step to create more positive thoughts that help you to live a life you love.
When you are just starting to overcome negative thoughts, start by thinking of a few thoughts you would LIKE to have about your body.
They might be “I love my body,” “my body does so much for me,” or “my body is strong and resilient.”
Think of a thought that reinforces the way you want to see your body. Then when you have a negative thought about your body, intentionally place this new thought in your head.
You might not believe it at first, and that’s okay. But the more you tell yourself these statements, the more you will believe them.
3. Take care of your body
You might be thinking, “what the heck does taking care of my body have to do with my thoughts?”
Well… a lot.
You see, when we take care of our bodies, we feel good. Right?
When we feel good, we are more likely to be kind to ourselves.
We have to be careful here to not use taking care of our bodies to dive deeper into our negative thoughts (i.e. overexercising, overeating, etc.)
When we use self-care as a way to FEEL good, our thoughts will follow.
This process can not only be helpful when overcoming thoughts about our body, it can be helpful when overcoming behaviors like emotional eating that harm our body.
All of these are about balance. Balancing the good with the bad. Balancing our self-care. Balancing the thoughts we have about food, our bodies, and so much more.
Like I said, this is a process. For the girl who asked what she can do, her thoughts won’t be changed tomorrow.
THESE THINGS TAKE TIME.
People so often get frustrated because they don’t get what they are working for overnight. We live in an overnight culture where we expect things to happen immediately.
But anything worth having doesn’t come overnight.
It takes consistency.
Consistently taking care of yourself. Consistently working on your thoughts. Consistently working towards being your healthiest and happiest self.
